These days, due to bad food habits and lack of dental care,
people suffer many dental problems, out of which a toothache, also termed as
‘dentalgia’ is most common. Mostly, the toothache arises out of tooth
decay, but there are a lot more reasons like an abscessed tooth, a damaged
filling, tooth fracture, infection in gums, dry
socket etc. that can lead to this problem. Loss of minerals from the
teeth makes enamel weak and leads to inflammation and ache. Pain is followed by
hot and cold sensitivity, swelling around the tooth, fever or a headache,
foul-tasting discharge and bleeding from gums. If this pain lasts for more than
2 days, you may feel pain on opening your mouth wide. Now the problem is how
can one get rid of a toothache? If you are going through any of these problems,
you need to consult a dentist and for a temporary treatment, you can opt in for
some home remedies that are listed below.
Home Remedies to Cure a Toothache
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has anti-inflammatory and
anti-bacterial properties which make it a great natural remedy for a toothache.
It has acetic acid and malic acid which purifies and detoxifies your infected
tooth. It also balances pH level of your mouth that fights tooth decay. Dip a
cotton ball in the mixture and keep on your affected tooth or gum for some
minutes. For satisfactory results repeat it 3-4 times a day.
Note – If it feels too strong for you, dilute it by
adding some water.
2. Saline Water
You can use saline water which is one of the easiest methods
to get relief from a toothache. Salt takes off the fluid from the swollen
tissue of gums. It has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic
properties that reduce swelling and pain and also combat bacteria which lead to
infection. Mix 1tsp salt in a glass of warm water, swirl it around your mouth
and spit out. Repeat the process till it gives you comfort.
3. Ice Pack
Another natural method to get rid of a toothache is an ice
pack. This remedy is excellent for the swollen tissues of your tooth and gum.
Wrap a cloth around the ice pack. Hold it on the cheek near the aching teeth
for some minutes. It relieves you from the unbearable pain as it numbs the
affected area.
4. Vanilla Extract
It is another popular toothache remedy which helps numb the
pain and has a calming effect. Dip a ball of cotton in it and place it on the
affected area. It is a great natural remedy to treat it.
5. Baking Soda
A mixture of baking soda with some lukewarm water works best on the
paining tooth. Rinse your mouth with it. It balances the level of pH in your
body thus eliminates bacteria. It can provide you instant relief from pain.
Note – Let the soda dissolve in water completely.
6. Tea Bag
Tea has antioxidants and tannic acid which are a kind of
astringent and can control bleeding. It also heals wounds and relieves pain.
You can also use regular tea leaves. Take a tea bag and dip it in warm water
for some minutes, squeeze it and hold it against the affected tooth or gums.
7. Garlic
You can also use garlic for a toothache. It is antibiotic in

reducing pain. Mix crushed garlic and salt and apply it directly to the
affected place.
8. Onion

9. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice has potent antiviral and antibacterial

can rub your affected tooth and gums with a mixture of lemon juice and salt.
10. Cucumber
Cucumber is another natural remedy to get rid of a toothache
fast. You just need to slice a piece of it and hold it over the tender area.
You can also use refrigerated cucumber as it could be more soothing, but only
if your tooth is not sensitive to cold.
11. Hydrogen Peroxide
In order to get instant relief from a toothache, you can
gargle with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and spit it out. Repeat this process
several times. It kills the bacteria due to its antibacterial properties.
12. Vinegar and Brown Paper
Soak some brown paper in vinegar and sprinkle black pepper
on one side. Now hold this to your cheek near the aching tooth and the warm

press and massage the point on your hand where the base of your thumb and index

swelling. Slice a potato into small pieces and hold it against your

A strong mouthwash with alcohol as an ingredient in it can
do wonders for all your oral problems. It’s an excellent home remedy to get rid
of a toothache. Swish some alcohol to get instant relief from pain.
16. Black Pepper
‘Piperine’ a component of black pepper can reduce a
toothache by triggering transient receptors in the body which leads to relief
from pain. Prepare a paste using black pepper, salt and water and apply
it on the tooth and gums.
17. Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper has capsaicin that is a natural pain
reliever. Crush some fresh cayenne pepper and add apple cider vinegar and a
pinch of ginger powder to make a mixture. You can apply this directly to the
hurting tooth.
18. Avocado
Anti-oxidant properties of avocado offer great relief from a
toothache. You just need to roast the avocado seeds and crush them to make a
fine powder. Apply this powder on the infected tooth and cover with a cotton
ball.
Note – Pregnant women should not use avocado.
19. Asafoetida
Asafoetida has powerful properties to kill the bacteria that
lead to a toothache. Moreover, it also relieves the pain. Make a mixture of
powdered asafetida and lemon juice, warm it and apply it to the painful tooth.
It provides you instant comfort.
20. Turmeric
Antibacterial, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties of
turmeric provide instant relief to your painful tooth. Make a paste of turmeric
powder in water and apply it on the problem tooth with the help of a cotton ball.
You can also chew raw turmeric if you like.

relieve a toothache. Make a fine paste of ground cloves with olive oil (or

Herbal Remedies to Cure a Toothache
23. Clove Oil

cotton ball soaked in clove oil and dab it on the problem tooth.
Note – Too much of clove oil can be toxic.

bacteria that lead to tooth decay. Drench a cotton ball in the oil and apply it
to the tender area.
25. Plantain Leaves

tooth and gum. You can either chew the plantain leaves or apply its paste over
the affected area.
26. Guava Leaves
Guava leaves too relieve a toothache. It is due to its
antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-microbial properties. Chew
some guava leaves so that its juice can work on your affected area.
27. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties
that make it an effective home remedy to treat a toothache. It also has
anesthetic properties. It also has methanol which reduces inflammation and
pain. Soak a cotton ball in peppermint oil and apply it on affected tooth to
get rid of the pain.
28. Bayberry

It makes it a great home remedy to treat a toothache. It also has rich amounts
of vitamin C that helps strengthening the gums. Make a paste of bayberry bark
using water and mix it with vinegar.
29. Wheat Grass Juice
If wheat grass juice is used as mouthwash, it absorbs toxins
and bacteria from gums. It is because of its antibacterial properties. Thus, it
combats tooth decay and relieves you from a toothache.
30. Homemade Essential Oils
There are certain essential oils that can work best for your
oral problems and toothaches. These oils include Myrrh oil, Eucalyptus oil, and
Frankincense, Rosemary and Melaleuca oils. You can also make toothpaste or
mouthwash using these oils to prevent oral problems.
31. Oil of Oregano
Oil
of oregano has inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Thus, it can
be used for the treatment of a toothache. Make a mixture of oregano oil with
olive oil or lukewarm water. Drench a cotton ball in the mixture and apply it
on the affected area.
32. Myrrh
Myrrh has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It
kills bacteria and soothes your painful tooth. For this, you need to boil myrrh
in water and when it get cooled add some amount of this solution in water and
swish the liquid in your mouth 5 to 6 times every day.

- Floss teeth to remove food particles trapped in teeth.
- Apply oral numbing gels.
- Apply ice packs for swelling.
- If some food particles get trapped between teeth, clean them gently with dental floss.
